Although it is certainly trendy, Noom is about making long-term changes to lose weight goals. But just like any other diet plan, Noom still has its advantages and disadvantages. Billed as "Weight Watchers for millennials", Noom is a health app designed by behavioral psychologists to help you lose weight for the long term. It focuses on making tangible, sustainable lifestyle shifts instead of encouraging more extreme forms of eating (for example, cutting away specific food groups or nutrients). The best thing about the Noom app is that it stimulates real, complete foods and recommends nutritious meals and snacks as often as possible. After you have taken a quiz with questions about how active you are, how much weight you want to lose and other medical conditions and demographic factors, an algorithm breaks down your personalized energy needs and how many calories you can eat from proteins, fat and carbohydrates. To help you follow these guidelines, the app asks you to log what you eat, a proof-based method that helps you keep in touch with how much you eat and what types of foods you tend. Another important disadvantage: the above-mentioned opening times. Although it is not really practical to make the offered coaches available 24/7, I have discovered in my own work as a registered dietitian that it is often out of work – eating out, traveling and at night – that much of the questions or pitfalls come up. If you want support after hours, the app can assign a target specialist at an additional cost, but the costs can limit it.
My own (small but noteworthy!) Bot to choose with Noom is that the language used to encourage and inspire behavioral change.
